“Attention!” “Yes, ma’am!”
My students snapped their legs together, their sweaty palms glued to the sides of their legs.
My eyes scanned the floor, ready to dart to a student to adjust their loose fists or bent legs. I strove for my students to achieve perfection, and envisioned each of them as already having completed their goal of black belt. Walking upon that sweat-stained mat, I felt complete. I loved the responsibility, control, and power I had earned by being one of the highest ranked black belts in my Tae Kwon Do studio.
However, the studio was not where I saw myself long-term.
During the summer after graduating from high school, I began to explore careers in the medical field. Through certifying as an Advanced-Emergency Medical Technician (A-EMT), I improved my ability to problem solve and take control of any situation at hand. By analyzing my patients critically, I was able to quickly decide what actions to execute during the emergency situation.
